Making the grade is important?..not quite..:

Theory lab made me think of something that is quite a moralistic issue.

Yesterday, I had to play a chord progression by memory. So logically, this lesson would be so that you remember what the chord progression sounds like and can identify it in Roman Numerals as well as figured bass.

Here's the dilemma: You have to play it perfectly. So I did and got an A but I could not tell you nor remember exactly if I had to write it down what the chord progession was primarily because A.) I played it by ear and was able to transpose it by ear, B.) I have good motor memory of my hands since I am a pianist.

Point: Yes I made the grade, but does making the grade and expectations hinder the journey to great musicianship? What can we do as teacher to have a healthy balance between making the grade and learning? Can you share similar experiences?

P.S: I will memorize that progression authographically.
