What do we think?

I think students should not get paid to learn or work harder because it is a false sense of reality. Yes, when they got out into the working world they will get paid so it will push them to work harder but if they go to college instead of them getting paid to learn they are going to have to pay. So I think that will push them to work harder as well because I feel as though they would not want to waist the thousands of dollars they are putting out to get that education.

I agree. Students should not get cash for good grades - extrinsic motivation is proven to lower a student's intrinsic motivation. Therefore, getting cash will only do harm to the student.

If we want to motivate students to get good grades, let's put money toward their higher education. Not going to college you say? You are out of luck then, I guess.

I agree with Chad, or at least kind of. I think that if the student does not plan on going on to college, giving them money is not worth it. I think a proper way to motivate students using money would be to add to a college scholarship account in their name. Yes, to children this may sound boring, but honestly giving them money right away is just going to guarantee that they spend it just as fast.

I know that whatever allowance my brother receives, even though he is 14 years old, he has a plan for. Whether it is going out to lunch with his friends or buying a new video game, its going to something that he believes is worth it now, not into an account for spending it in the future. We kind of have to think about it that way...

When I said it's too bad that one won't be going to college, I was just being spiteful. I really believe that if a student does not plan on attending college, we should still pour money into their "scholarship account." If they decide to go, then that is great, but if they don't decide to go we should use the money to: 1) go to the public school's budget or 2) be allocated into other scholarships/scholarship programs.
