This is something we haven't really discussed, but I have been thinking about it quite a bit lately. . . What is everyone's opinion about the 5 year Bachelor in Music Ed and Master of Arts in Teaching?

Personally, I would not do it because I am not sure what I want to do with my master yet.And if I decide one of my options, Westminster does not offer it and I would have wasted time and money. This is for someone who knows exactly what they want and is a great oportunity for those who know this is the right path.

I'm considering it. I don't actually know if teaching is what I want, or if i nescessarilly want to stay here for 4 more years. but I don't think grad school in simply one extra year is a bad idea. It's a degree--a piece of paper that adds so much to your professional life (salary wise, positioning wise, respect wise) and it would technically cost 1/2 of what another masters would. and you can always get multiple masters.

eh... I would love to shave as many years off of my graduate studies as possible. As a transfer student it would be optimal to add just one year instead of two and have a masters degree. However, I'm not sure I could stay here any longer than I have to, let alone the 4 that I'm doomed to. (too much?) Also, I would love to attend another institution for my graduate degree possibly in the city and state that I intend to work.

...only time will tell!

Don't we have to decide if we want to do that 5 year program or not by next year? Or is it the end of this year? Goodness gracious i feel really uninformed..and without the time to really find out what I have to do other than study and practice hard. Anyway, I think getting both a bachelor and masters is an excellent idea. I also agree that you can get multiple masters, and why not get it out of the way as soon as possible? If one was to stop school after a bachelors, one is more prone to.. you know. Get married, have children that consume WAY (did I say 'WAY'?) too much time... that whole lecture. On the brighter side, we would be saving a bundle with that program.

From what I've heard from some of the people currently in the program, it's pretty intense... if you think about it, they really are just cramming what normally takes a couple years (while working granted) and stuffing into two semesters. I was thinking about the program initially, but I think I'd rather get a job first and see what another school has to offer so that my education is based here, not rooted here. We'll see though, like you guys said, right now it's all about juries/exams/portfolios/piano.

I also feel uninformed about the masters program. If I knew more about it I might consider it more; however, at the moment I am focused on the things I have to do to get my bachelor degree first. Although the option is very practical and money/time saving, I would like to experience teaching before I make a permanent decision. I want to make sure I am positive about the area I pursue a masters in.
